Betty Ruth & Milton B. Hollander Healing Garden, Smilow Cancer Hospital
The final element in Yale-New Haven’s planned development of its core block, this 14-story center consolidates and expands the many oncological functions which were previously scattered throughout the Yale-New Haven Hospital complex. It also links to adjacent parking structures and the Children’s Hospital via pedestrian bridges. Landscape elements designed by T|G include an arrival plaza, richly-detailed streetscape and a large, seventh level roof-top healing garden.
T|G’s 30+ year relationship with YNHH includes the 1989 design of the Children’s Hospital and planning & renovation of the entire complex in the early ‘90s. Ongoing efforts involve site planning and documentation for zoning applications affecting a several block area with parking structures, retail development and pedestrian and vehicular circulation. Detailed design issues include site lighting, signage and the sustainability concerns for LEED certification.
