Stockbridge Pedestrian District Open Space Master Plan
University of Massachusetts - Amherst
In planning the design of this 12 acre pedestrian precinct at the historic core of the UMass campus, T|G proposed a memorable place that enhances the experience and image of the University. It encourages both social engagement and emotional connection with the regional landscape, with the history of the institution, and with the missions of the visual arts and sciences facilities that dominate the precinct. Key to the success of the project was careful vetting through a broad community constituency.
The proposed expansion of the University Arboretum, the agrarian history of the institution, and the need for multi-use event space all dictated the design and vocabulary of this pedestrian destination on campus. Emergency and service access, handicapped accessibility, and interim parking are also important components of the plan.
