Yale Science Area Chilled Water Plant & Chilled Water Distribution Loop
For this major utilities infrastructure installation, T|G led the design for the site of the facility as well as the restoration of a half mile of the Farmington Canal Greenway Trail and the implementation of two city blocks of streetscape. T|G introduced a new, sustainable approach to these urban sites, using native tree species to create a series of natural groves for walkers and bicyclists and introducing new drought-tolerant grasses. Existing trees were protected and historic masonry walls were restored. Subtle, but significant re-grading accommodated a new accessible trail crossing. More dramatic grading helped screen the facility. Storm water was managed in swales and with below-grade detention structures. Pedestrian safety was addressed at a number of crossings with special pavement, traffic control bollards, security phones, crosswalks and signage.
